Saving the Environment? How Tacky!

In the following news story on the CBC web site, one reads about a subdivision property rule in Aurora (North of Toronto), that forbids owners from hanging laundry to dry on an exterior clothesline, as this was thought to make a neighbourhood look too “low rent.” A group called Right to Dry was formed, to fight this rule, and have had some success in pushing the local municipal government to act by urging provincial action.

When I read the story on the CBC web site, I was struck by the following quote:

“But others, including Aurora resident Will Cordingley, say the clotheslines could become unsightly.

‘All you’d see is laundry — if everybody had one across here, that’s all you would see,’ he said.”

Unsightly? If one were to drive through Aurora, or anywhere in a typical neighbourhood in North America, one would see plenty of gas-guzzling SUV’s. Is that less unsightly?

To me, this seems like one more indicator of the fact that people will talk the talk about reducing energy use and reducing global warning, but they draw the line at anything that might affect their lifestyle, require effort, or offend their esthetic sensibilities. A sense of entitlement permeates this kind of thinking.
We need a culture that does not approve of conspicuous consumption, but rather of conspicuous non-consumption. Seeing a neighbourhood with plenty of clotheslines outside is the opposite of unsightly; it would be a sign of people wearing their environmental hearts on their sleeves (and sheets, pants, pillowcases etc.)

American Idol, NHL Hockey and Nascar Racing

What do these three things have in common? A lot of people are less than honest regarding the reasons they watch — some people watch NASCAR for the crashes, a lot of people watch NHL hockey for the fights, and I suspect a lot of people watch American idol to see Simon slam performers who are spectacularly bad.

I suppose this would be harmless enough, but I am concerned there is a hidden message here when it comes to American Idol (and indeed Canadian idol, based on the ad I just saw for it); the way that some contestants are humiliated sends a message that only certain people should sing: those who are deemed to fit preconceived notions of talent and physical appearance. The ones who have the package.

One often hears the term “Consumer Culture” — this could be turned around as “Culture Consumer,” where one’s role vis-a-vis music, or indeed any kind of culture is rigidly defined; you are either approved as a content creator by the cultural gatekeepers, or you are a consumer, whose only role is to ingest mass media and excrete money. We have been silently dis-enfranchised when it comes to music, which arose as a participatory experience.

So I ask you, as an act of defiance: sing a song every day: there is no DRM on vocal cords, yet.

Podcasts and Poetry

Last night (18 May, 2007) I was at St. Thomas’s Church in Toronto, recording a St. Thomas’s Poetry Series Book launch. The event consisted of readings by various poets whose work is contained in the book Poetry As Liturgy: An Anthology by Canadian Poets. Over the next two or three days I will get the audio edited and posted on the church web site, and I will post the link here when done.
While recording the event, I was stuck by a few things. Firstly, poetry works so well when spoken aloud. Obvious, but I had forgotten this simple fact. In our speed-reading culture, it was great to in effect surrender control to a poet reading a poem. So much of one’s interaction with the printed word (either paper or pixels) is like linguistic fast food; Poetry read out loud is like a gourmet approach to the language. Maybe both podcasting and poetry can benefit from this obvious synergy.

Secondly, there were at least 50-60 people in attendance. Not thousands, but still in my mind an encouraging number. Also, a good number of young people were in the audience, and this was good to see.

The Joy of Feet

In October of 2006, the lease on our second car expired, and we made the decision to not replace it. It means a long commute to work for me by public transit in Toronto, but when I do the math I figure we’re saving about $500 a month (and seeing gas at over $1.10 a litre this weekend) makes me feel even better about my decision.

I don’t miss driving on the 401, a psychotic episode paved in ashphalt. I don’t miss the car dealership always finding things that need repair when I brought the car in for regular service.

I like going to work with my eyes closed, or reading a book, or listening to music or a podcast.

And to the car makers and oil producers: BITE ME!

Gotta Love Irony in Action!

An ad on the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) has been bugging me for some time — It is a recruiting ad for Trent University. The text in the ad solemnly states that “The World belongs to those who understand it” . However, the ad also has a hot model smiling out at you. I guess it doesn’t matter how well you understand the world; if you want to sell something, you need sex.

All the ad really says is “it doesn’t matter what you know, as long as you’re cute you’ve got it made,” a shallow message that I didn’t expect to see coming from a University.

Cheney Warns Iran

“Vice President Dick Cheney used the setting of an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf to deliver a stern message to Iran today, warning that the United States would not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons or gain the upper hand in the Middle East.”

I think this kind of warning has more credibility if it came from a country that did not possess nuclear weapons, and indeed was not the only country in history to use them against others. As it is, this is just hypocracy.
