Every day I see new stories of just how troubled the election in the U.S. could be.
Stories of large scale attempts to purge voters from voting rolls are commonplace: Republican plans to challenge the votes of those who homes have been foreclosed; “robo calls” that attempt to trick people into trying to vote on the wrong day, or into thinking they can vote by phone.
And of course there is the issue of electronic voting machines; made by companies with troubling political connections, these easily hackable devices have already been accused of vote switching “glitches.”
Next, early voting issues – I see huge lines, and systems overwhelmed; exhausted voters just giving up after waiting hours in line. What will happen on November 4th?
The U.S. sees itself as the model democracy, the country that does democracy best. Regardless of the outcome on Tuesday next, that belief is certainly questionable.
